Just Like You Said it Would Be
C.K. Kelly Martin
Publication date: February 15th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Did you ever want something so much that it felt like a kind of sickness, one you didn’t want to be cured of? On New Year’s Eve the feeling compels seventeen-year-old Amira to text the Irish ex-boyfriend she’s been missing desperately since they broke up at the end of summer, when she returned to Canada.

They agreed they wouldn’t be friends, that it would never be enough. But that was then— back when Amira’s separated parents had shipped her off to relatives in Dublin for the summer so they could test-drive the idea of getting back together on a long haul cruise. Back when Amira was torn away from a friend in need in Toronto only to fall in love with a Dublin screenwriting class and take a step closer to her dream career. And only to fall for cousin Zoey’s band mate, Darragh, the guy who is first her friend, then her enemy and later something much more complicated—the guy she can say anything to, the guy who makes every inch of her feel wide awake in a way she hadn’t known was possible. The guy she might never see again. Or is there, despite the distance, somehow still a chance for them?

My Review:

Just Like You Said it Would Be was such a wonderful YA romance! It tells the story of Amira that lives in Canada, but is sent to Dublin to spend the summer with family while her parents are on vacation and trying to mend their marriage. Amira is soon introduced to Darragh, one of her cousin Zoey’s band mates, and I love/hate relationship quickly ensues. Regardless of the tension between them and attempts at only being friends, they soon find themselves confiding in one another, spending a lot of time together, and falling in love. Unfortunately this is overshadowed by the lingering date for Amira to fly back to Canada.

This novel drew me in from the first page and I was not able to put it down – despite it being a Teen/YA novel. It was so well-written and full of different and complex characters that I found myself easily invested in. Although Amira and Darragh’s relationship is definitely the meat of the novel, there are several other subplots going on regarding friendships, family, education, dreams, and definitely disappointments in life. Teen and YA readers will easily identify with the uncertainty that comes with growing up, going away to college, first loves, etc. Adult readers – prepare to find yourself quickly being swept away in the nostalgia of your own experiences at the age. Whether it was joy, curiosity, anger, worry, or sadness, author C.K. Kelly Martin perfectly captures the varying emotions associated with that age.

While reading, I found myself cheering like crazy for Amira and Darragh, resulting in having to remind myself that first, it’s only a novel and second, they live on two different continents with their entire lives ahead of them. Amira with her talent and dreams of being a screenwriter and Darragh with his investment in his band made for a happily-ever-after not seem promising, but still, I hoped.

Reading about the author I learned that this was a long work in progress in which she poured her heart and soul, however, I do cross my fingers that she has more to tell the world about Amira and Darragh because I will be the first on in line to grab a copy!

Author Bio:

Long before I was an author I was a fan of books about Winnie the Pooh, Babar, Madeline, Anne Shirley and anything by Judy Blume. Throughout high school my favourite class was English. No surprise, then, that most of my time spent at York University in Toronto was as an English major–not the traditional way to graduate with a B.A. in Film Studies but a fine way to get a general arts education.

After getting my film studies degree I headed for Dublin, Ireland and spent the majority of the nineties there in forgettable jobs meeting unforgettable people and enjoying the buzz. I always thoughts I’d get around to writing in earnest eventually and I began writing my first novel in a flat in Dublin and finished it in a Toronto suburb. By then I’d discovered that writing about young characters felt the freshest and most exciting to me. You have most of your life to be an adult but you only grow up once.

Currently residing near Toronto with my Dub husband, I became an Irish citizen in 2001 and continue to visit Dublin as often as I can. My first young adult book, I Know It’s Over, came out with Random House in September 2008 and was followed by One Lonely Degree, The Lighter Side of Life and Death, My Beating Teenage Heart and Yesterday. I released Yesterday’s sequel, Tomorrow, in 2013 and put out my first adult novel, Come See About Me, as an ebook in June 2012. My most recent YA book, The Sweetest Thing You Can Sing, was published by Cormorant Books’ Dancing Cat Books imprint in 2014 and I’m pleased to announce they’ll be releasing my upcoming contemporary young adult novel, Delicate, on September 16th. About Defining Her

Nellie Hawthorne is a woman who has it all. A devoted husband, her own business, a wealthy lifestyle. But the Nellie she is now is much different from her past. A past filled with abuse, addiction, and men. Nellie’s carefully constructed new life is suddenly in jeopardy when a blast from the past emerges in her small town and her overbearing mother-in-law starts pushing for grandchildren and questions start being asked. A budding new friendship presents itself at an opportune time, and a once friendless Nellie finds herself growing closer to Prue Doherty.
Prue Doherty is the quintessential good girl. Always making the right decisions, always playing it safe. Until she meets a man that could change all of that. Still reeling from a devastating breakup and betrayal that had her fleeing from Chicago and settling into suburb life with her mom close by, Prue finds herself in a damaging funk. But everything changes when she befriends Nellie Hawthorne.
Nellie is trying to escape her past. Prue wants that perfect future. While both women strive to change their lives, they continue to cling to the past. But what defines us? Who we were then . . . or who we are trying to be now? Lies, manipulation, and deceit are woven throughout the pages of this edgy women’s fiction novel, with an ending you won’t see coming.

My Review:

This was a really different read regarding women’s fiction, but I loved how thought-provoking and emotional that it was. Nellie’s past is absolutely not picture-perfect and she has kept that past hidden from her husband Harrison. They are a successful, active couple but he wants children and she’s not so sure. Prue is trying to make a fresh start and feels that she’s been robbed of happiness too many times. Nellie and Prue become friends although it always appears to be strained and awkward. At the same time, Harrison meets a new friend and the appropriateness of the friendship isn’t exactly what you would expect from him. The good girl Prue seems like the wronged woman and damsel in constant distress, but you quickly realize she’s not as innocent as she seems.

To be honest, none of the characters are very likable in this novel, each doing, saying, or thinking things that they shouldn’t, however, I preferred Nellie to anyone else. Yes, Nellie came from a horrible upbringing with a horrible mother, but she did turn her life around. She wasn’t honest with Harrison about her past, but she did become a better person, a good wife, and a successful business owner. It appeared that her marriage to her successful attorney husband was in a bit of a rut, but Harrison was struggling with desires to become a father and reconciling Nellie’s complete opposite mindset on the subject. Prue just grated my last nerve, playing the outcast and wronged person in basically every relationship. At first, I just found her weak and felt sorry for some of her pathetic thoughts and ramblings, but later realized she was really just a few shades off of crazy.

I loved Samantha March’s honest and raw development of all of these characters, whether I liked the characters or not. Her writing style generously allows readers a window into the character’s minds and souls. However, silly, cringe-worthy, or inappropriate, the reader knows exactly how the characters are feeling, as well as, knowing their innermost thoughts. When I first finished this novel I was thinking to myself that there wasn’t that much “meat” to the plot, however, after thinking it over for awhile, I realized that I got a lot from reading it. Nellie had a dark and shameful past and was afraid of her husband learning the truth – but was trying to overcome it. Prue considered herself a victim for the majority of her life and decided that she was within her rights to deceive and hurt others because that had been done to her. Both women were living their lives based on the past and as the title alludes, allowing the past to define them as a person, rather than focusing on the present and future and the happy lives that they could lead. The author conveys an important message of being honest and truthful, as well as, provides a strong reminder that our past doesn’t make us who we are, it’s what we choose as adults on our paths forward that demonstrates who we are as a person.

This is not light-hearted chick lit but a great read that makes you think and reflect on your own life and actions. I definitely categorize this as a must-read, especially for Samantha March fans or lovers of more in-depth women’s fiction.

Whisper of Love Book Tour!

Whisper of Love, by Melissa Foster

NEW RELEASE…

Tempest Braden adores her family and her small hometown, but sometimes too much of a good thing can be confining. At almost thirty, having watched most of her siblings find true love, she’s anxious to experience her own happily ever after, and the move to Pleasant Hill, Maryland, is just the change she needs. When she rents a room from ruggedly handsome, and closed-off, artist Nash Morgan and his adorable son, Phillip, she thinks she’s found a little slice of heaven on the outskirts of town, where she can concentrate on building her business. That is, if she can ignore the undeniable heat between her and the sinfully hot single father.

When Nash bought his farmette, he had one goal in mind—to provide a loving, stable home for his son. He never imagined he’d be raising Phillip alone, or renting out a room to keep their heads above water. Then again, he never imagined losing his brother, or spending two years sailing around the world with parents who seemed to forget one son was still alive.

Sparks fly from the moment Tempest moves in, and her positive energy and inquisitive nature brings new life into Nash and Phillip’s quiet, confined world. For the first time in years, Nash wants to let a woman into his world, but while his loss made him stronger, that strength came at a price, leaving him walled off and wary of opening his heart again.

WHISPER ON LOVE is part of the Love in Bloom series. While this can be read as a stand-alone novel, for even more reading enjoyment you may want to read the entire Love in Bloom series in series order.

My Review:

Once again, author Melissa Foster has written a sweet but sexy romance that will melt your heart! This story is about Tempest Braden who has recently left Peaceful Harbor and moved to Pleasant Hill, hoping to expand her music therapy business. When Tempest can’t deal with her cousin’s up-all-night working, she searches for an inexpensive room to rent, leading her to Nash Morgan. Nash is a sexy, quiet and mysterious artist living on a small farm with his young son, Phillip – and sparks immediately fly between him and Tempest. Not long after moving into Nash’s home, Tempest and Nash find themselves incredibly drawn to one another, and Tempest starts to completely change Nash and Phillip’s world. Quiet and withdrawn Nash must soon face his hurtful past in order to build a future for him, Phillip and Tempest together.

I have to start with what wonderful characters Melissa Foster has created in Whisper of Love. Tempest is about as perfect a young woman you could find. She’s beautiful, smart, family-oriented, talented, and compassionate. Although trying to move her business more towards children’s music classes, she has spent several years as a music therapist working with patients having cancer, and even playing and singing for a patient in a coma. Nash seems distant initially, but quickly warms up once Tempest is around. Still struggling with his brother’s death, Nash keeps a lot to himself. Moreover, Phillip’s mother left when he was a few months old, and Nash has completely centered his life around caring for Phillip, but to the point where he needs to start letting go a little. I was surprised at how receptive he was to Tempest’s suggestions for Phillip to go to music groups, preschool, etc. considering it had only been Nash and Phillip for three years, but liked that he was open to her ideas. Phillip was absolutely adorable – specifically in the end of the book – which I can’t tell you about but it’s so sweet!

I always love Melissa Foster’s novels and this was no exception. I did find that their story was almost too perfect and too simple at times. This couple had very little conflict to overcome, which was great on one hand, but also seemed to weaken the overall plot on the other hand. Don’t get me wrong, I love HEA novels, but bumps in the road always add to the excitement of the plot. Regardless, Nash and Tempest’s story was wonderful and I particularly loved the interactions between Tempest’s parents and Phillip! Anyone looking to read a feel-good romance, look no further than Whisper of Love. This novel is a feel-good romance that also touches on dealing with pain from the past, as well as, the importance of family.

Yours And Mine
Christine Duval
(Freshman Forty #2)
Publication date: February 10th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

The highly anticipated sequel to Positively Mine….

Picking up from the dramatic ending of Positively Mine, Yours and Mine continues the Freshman Forty series as we meet Danny Santoro, Laurel’s baby’s father, for the first time.

It’s been almost a year since he last saw her, that sultry morning she walked off the beach before dawn had even cracked the August sky. It seemed from her silence, she was out of his life forever.

But Laurel’s timing couldn’t be worse to tell him he’s a father. The last year hasn’t been easy. Danny’s own father was arrested for a DUI, his mother moved out, and Danny started sleeping with his brother’s old high school, drug-abusing girlfriend.

After Laurel shocks him with the news, she attempts to relinquish Danny of any parental responsibility leading to a heated custody battle. In an unorthodox arrangement, an eccentric judge orders Danny and Laurel to spend alternating weekends with each other for the upcoming school year.

Told from Danny’s point of view, Yours and Mine explores the second chapter of a romance that never got off the ground, the challenges of young parenting, and the hope of rekindled love.

My Review:

I’m so excited to be a part of the Yours and Mine blog tour! Let me begin by saying that unfortunately, I have not read the prequel to this novel, Positively Mine, but it did not keep me from being totally engrossed in and loving the story!

Danny hasn’t seen Laurel in about a year when she shows up at the marina where he works, asking if they can talk. Danny sees the baby with Laurel and assumes it’s her little sister, but later learns that is their baby. While away at college, Laurel kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone and Danny just learns that he’s a dad once their daughter, Carolyn is three months old. Laurel has paperwork in hand to free Danny of any parental responsibility, but Danny shocks her by stating that he wants to be in his daughter’s life. This novel takes us on the journey of two young people trying to co-parent and learn about what is more important in their lives.

I quickly fell in love with this novel, as well as, with Danny. As stated several times in the book, Danny is not like most guys and really works at being involved in his daughter’s life. I did find myself very frustrated with Laurel several times in this novel, mostly due to her unhealthy attachment to her boyfriend, Mike, but I also had the utmost respect for her raising a baby while going to school. I’m still on the fence about Danny’s family members that seemed to run hot and cold without warning.

This was a great read and although it’s somewhat of a cliffhanger ending, I really loved the book. Unplanned pregnancy, college, and mixed emotions about the other parent are all things that people can identify with on some level. Christine Duval brought these themes to life with Yours and Mine, weaving all of the ups and downs together in a wonderful fiction novel. Geared towards teen and young adults, I feel any age can enjoy this novel. I hope there is another installment in this series and can’t wait to read more from this author!

*A Standalone New Adult Romance.*

Silas Sparks was my first love. My only love. The guy I thought I would marry, and almost did.

We were engaged. For a week. In high school. It was the happiest week of my life. But then reality hit and I broke off the engagement. I was only 17. I couldn’t get married! I had plans for my life. Plans that included college and someday running a large corporation.

Silas was crushed. He couldn’t understand why I did it. But that’s Silas. He lives in the moment, never worries about the future. After we broke up, he took off for Europe and never came back.

That was two years ago. I haven’t seen or talked to him since. Then just as I’m about to leave college for summer break, guess who shows up at my door? Looking even hotter than I remember, flashing that sexy smile of his, telling me he’s home for the summer, living just a few houses down from mine!

Now I’m panicking. I was never supposed to see him again. Silas is the past. I’ve moved on. And yet here he is, and all I can think about is how much I want him back. It can never happen, but even so, I can’t deny the truth. And the truth is…I still love Silas.

EXCERPT:

Silas

“Why were you flirting with her?” Willow asks. “You don’t live here. It’s not like you could date her.”

“I wasn’t flirting. I was just giving her my order.” I stretch my legs out under the table, letting them brush against Willow’s.

She crosses her legs and turns to me. “You were giving her the Silas smile. No girl can resist that and you know it. You were definitely flirting.”

“Why do you care?” I nudge her leg with mine and keep it there. I know I shouldn’t keep touching her but I can’t help it. I haven’t seen her forever and now that she’s here, I have this need to touch her, even in just an innocent way. I’m a very tactile person. Touch is a way I communicate, sometimes without even knowing it.

“I don’t care,” she says in a tone that implies the opposite. “Do what you want. I just don’t think you should flirt with some girl you have no intention of asking out. You’re leading her on.”

“A person can flirt without having it go anywhere.”

“Then what’s the purpose?”

Typical Willow logic at work. She has to have an answer to everything. An answer that makes sense to her.

“There doesn’t have to be a purpose.” I know that comment will get her going, but I put it out there anyway.

“Of course there does. You can’t just do something for no reason.”

“Fine.” I lean across the table and give her that Silas smile she was referring to. “I flirted with her so she’d get your order correct. I’m sure they’re not used to having to follow such specific guidelines for making a burger. I was just making sure they got it right.”

She sighs. “I appreciate your efforts but you don’t have to resort to selling your body just to get my order correct.”

I laugh and sit back. “I wasn’t selling my body. It was just a smile.”

“I think that girl would like more than that.” Willow holds up the receipt, which has a phone number written on back with the words ‘call me.’

“Huh. I wondered what she wrote on there.” I take the receipt and shove it in my pocket.

“You’re keeping it?” Willow looks disgusted with me.

I shrug. “You never know.”

“Never know what?”

Before I can answer, our food arrives, delivered by a short, scrawny kid who doesn’t look legally old enough to work. He’s probably the little brother of the girl at the register. They look similar.

“Wait.” Willow stops him before he leaves. “Could you get us another cup for the milkshake? And another straw?”

He nods and walks off.

I set the basket of fries between us as Willow inspects her burger, lifting the top of the bun.

“Is it the way you wanted it?” I ask.

“Yes. It’s perfect.” She puts the bun back in place. “But your flirting trick didn’t completely work. She forgot the cup and the straw.”

“That’s because you asked for that, not me.” I smile, then take a big bite of my burger.

“Whatever,” she mumbles, picking up a fry.

She eats fries one at a time, whereas I grab several and eat them all at once. That’s why we always shared an order. It would take Willow forever to finish a basket of fries on her own, eating them one at a time like that.

I wonder if she shares her fries when she goes out with other guys. I try not to think about that. Thinking about her with another guy makes me angry and I never get angry. Except when it comes to Willow. She brings out all my emotions. The good, the bad, the in-between. This girl gets to me the way no one else can.

When I left two years ago, I wasn’t sure I’d ever see her again, and now, working for her parents, I’ll see her every day.

This is going to be a very interesting summer.

Moments.

Every life is made of thousands of them, each one strung together with the next. Some are yellow and happy, some are blue and sad, and some…

Some wipe out color altogether.

“I love you,” is what I should have told Maverick.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m still fighting.”

Instead I just watched him leave.

Now my husband, my everything is battling for each breath, and all I can do is stare at the machines as the clock ticks off precious minutes.

The doctors said the first twenty-four hours are critical—but every moment is critical.

You never know which will be your last.

This is our story, and I’m not ready for it to end.

EXCERPT:

I’m in the front seat of the police car. My purse is on my lap. I didn’t bring anything else. I didn’t even change my clothes.

We’ve been driving for ten minutes, I think. I’m not sure. I’ve asked the officer questions, and he answered what he could. But I’m stuck on “St. Luke’s Hospital” and “found non-responsive.”

A sob swells in my chest, but I hold it in. Somehow, I’m not falling apart on the outside, although my insides are so big they might explode. I rub my arms for warmth. I hadn’t realized I was cold.

The officer is quiet now. It’s probably better this way. I was unresponsive to what he said, nodding my head to the words I didn’t hear clearly. I think he explained the accident, but I’ve already forgotten the details. I can only focus on one thing at a time.

The highways are empty except for the occasional semi that passes. I try to concentrate on the road and the scenery. The broken white line dividing the lanes. The green signs stating the up-coming turn-offs. Streetlights illuminating the way. Anything but the burn in my eyes and the emptiness in my chest.

Found unresponsive.”

I don’t know what that means. Could he not speak? Was he breathing? Was he moving? Was his heart beating?

Oh, God!

I must’ve finally let out the sob, because the officer turns to me.

“It’ll be all right,” he reassures me, touching my arm. But how does he know? No one knows that; we only hope. And right now, hope isn’t good enough. I have to see Maverick for myself.

The officer doesn’t understand. Mav’s been my rock. He rescued me from myself. Mav, my Mav, he owns me.

My heart grows heavier, pressing against my ribs.

“Can you pull over, please?”

“Of course,” the officer answers.

The car slows down and moves to the side of the road. I’m unbuckled before we’ve stopped completely. A moment later, I throw open the door and vomit.

My Review:

I have read several of Melissa Foster’s novels and once again, I was not disappointed! This is the story of Jake Ryder and Addison (Addy Dahl). While in South Carolina for Addy’s bestfriend’s wedding to Jake’s brother, Addy and Jake are flirting like crazy – as usual. Neither Addy nor Jake do relationships, but instead prefer one-night stands and no strings attached. They sound perfect for each other, but what happens when they both start thinking and feeling things that they aren’t used to? Despite things changing with Jake, Addy is dead-set on following through with her plans to spend ten days hiking alone, which frustrates and worries Jake. As a search and rescue professional, Jake can’t stop worrying about Addy and if she’ll be o.k. for ten days alone in the mountains.

I honestly think this may be my favorite Melissa Foster novel yet! Although, if I went back to previous reviews of her other books, I probably have already said that, lol. Addy is fiercely independent, as well as stubborn. When she finds herself still thinking about Jake “the morning after,” she keeps telling herself that it’s nothing and that she doesn’t “do relationships.” Jake is incredibly sexy and adorable with a bad boy side, however, a romantic side starts to reveal itself while he and Addy are on the island for the wedding. I love the fact that they both are in such denial that there may be more going on besides sexual attraction and chemistry. Their story definitely holds some frustrating moments because of Addy’s stubbornness, yet I couldn’t help falling in love with them as a couple and rooting for them to get together and live happily ever after.

“Rescued by Love” is full of sizzling chemistry and tension, flirting, good friends, and family. Something that I love about Foster’s books are that although there are main characters that may have some seriously hot moments, there is also a huge presence of family morals and love. Moreover, even if you don’t read every book in a series, she provides enough back story so that there is no confusion about what is going on with the various family members. I must say that I almost always fall in love with her leading men, but the women are always just as strong and likable characters as the men. Jake and Addy’s story was absolutely fantastic from the first page and I never got up from my chair until I finished the last word. This book is a smart, funny, and heart-warming contemporary romance with just the right amount of hot, steamy scenes. I have absolutely nothing to say that is negative about this fabulous story!

The Next Best Thing: Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway

About the Book:

Four years ago, Emma Fraser’s first love took his own life. Now, twenty years old and in college, Emma and her best friend, Andy, are still mourning the loss of a friend and brother. Nothing is the same as it once was…and things are about to change even more.

Too heartbroken to even consider falling in love again, Emma stays distracted by school and work. Until she meets Landon and, for the first time ever, finds herself believing she might actually have a future with someone. But when Deegan Burke—the man responsible for all of Emma’s heartache—gets out of prison early, Emma is suddenly confronted by her worst fears. And when faced with choices she never thought she’d have to make, Emma discovers that the only person she really wants by her side is the last person she ever expected.

My Review:

I am so excited to review “The Next Best Thing” and be a part of Wendi Nunnery’s Blog Tour! Let me begin by saying that I did not read the first novel, “The Best kept Secret,” however, the sweet author provided such a detailed synopsis that I had no issues following along and getting completely wrapped up in this novel. This novel picks up with Emma in college and still best friends with Andy. She is also still friends with Elsie, although the relationship quickly becomes strained after Andy ends his relationship with Elsie, yet Emma and Andy are still friends.

Emma has done well in school, made good grades, and sort of stumbled through everything – without truly getting over the loss of Jesse and the impact that his death had on her, her friends, and family. What no one knows is the secret and guilt that Emma has been carrying since Jesse’s death, as well as, her fear of no one understanding or forgiving her. Things seem to brighten up and lighten up once she meets Landon, who happens to also be Andy’s roommate, but even as she thinks she’s falling in love, she still feels as if something is holding her back. Emma struggles through the realization of her true feelings, accepting that Deegan gets out of prison and also faces the beginning and end of various relationships.

I loved the sweet romance of “The Next Best Thing” while still reminding the reader of Emma’s faith and personal beliefs. Emma’s vulnerability and curiosity about relationships and physical intimacy made her very real and I would think, very relatable to young women. I was also crazy about Andy and couldn’t help but wish they were a couple as soon as I was introduced to his character! At times I was frustrated with Emma for keeping the secret that was eating away at her and causing her so much guilt but also respected how she opened up at her own pace throughout the novel and shared her secret with various people when she was ready.

The most prominent theme of this novel was absolutely forgiveness – both wanting forgiveness for yourself, as well as, wanting or needing to forgive others. The author beautifully captured the relief and peace that comes along with forgiveness, while also touching on themes of friendship, honesty, love, and growing up.  I loved most everything about this novel and am in awe of Nunnery’s writing. I so look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
