Book review: Story of a Secret Heart

secret-heartSynopsis: Story of a Secret Heart calls on the author’s own experiences to weave together a hilarious and thought-provoking dark romantic comedy.
However, be warned, this story is not for everyone! It is a very personal, brutally honest story, about love, life and laughter, told from the heart.

As Cassi, a 30-year old single woman leaves a long-term, unhappy relationship, she struggles with the pain and anguish of a broken heart. When, by chance, she meets a handsome stranger, he introduces her to a world that she didn’t even know existed: a very dark and dangerous world! As she begins to slowly forget all about her broken heart she learns to have fun again. It is then that her life starts to spiral out of control and all she can do is laugh and hang on tight. Through her trials and tribulations, Cassi must find her inner strength and keep a smile on her face even in front of adversity.

A troubling and uplifting story that will touch the heart of readers.

My review:

“Story of Secret Heart” is a very honest account of a young woman’s life after being dumped by the man she had hoped to one day marry. Cassi moved to Australia from the UK after a few years of traveling, deciding to commit to her relationship with Guy. Years later, she learns that he has been cheating on her and wants to break up. After completely falling apart – lots of crying, drinking and way too many phone calls to Guy, she starts going out and about again with friends. After locking herself out one night, she drunkenly bangs on a neighbor’s door for help, when she meets Ben – a handsome guy with tons of social connections, and a tendency towards illegal activities. Later she meets Jake who is much more responsible and appropriate as far as a boyfriend but remains torn between the two. The story tells all about her wild and crazy days and nights, as well as, several tearful times after breaking up with Guy and trying to move on with her life.

I liked the blatant but sometimes cringeworthy honesty of the author as she wrote this story based on her own experiences. Cassi tried to move on and get over heartbreak by having fun and making friends, but honestly, there were times I feared for her liver or feared that she would end up with some strange STD! She definitely put herself out there and tried to move on, but Ben’s controlling and dangerous tendencies were off-putting. I truly felt for her as she reminisced about times with Guy’s bitchy sisters – we’ve all known people like them, unfortunately, but I kept asking myself why she stayed with him so long. He wasn’t abusive but distant, unemotional and had a horrible family that basically took pride in emotionally torturing Cassi. I also have to admit I wasn’t crazy about the dating website that she joined where the two people can reach an agreement as far as the details of their relationship and financial compensation…

What I loved about this story is that if any women has ever gone completely bat-shit crazy after a breakup, then they will easily relate to Cassi and her story. The author’s writing style gives the reader the feeling that the author is sitting there, verbally telling this story herself as if she were telling a friend about something she did the night before. Throughout the novel and despite any of Cassi’s actions, it was still evident that she was an overall good person – but she had completely lost her way and was basically winging it as she went. At the end of each chapter the author includes some great quotes, basically summing up a lesson from the chapter or just expressing the sentiment that shit happens and we move on. Sometimes the worst things that happen to us in our lives ends up being an inspiration, such as with author Cassi Ellen. Although I was ready to pull my hair out over the ending, I am now hooked on this character and anxiously await the follow-up to find out what craziness Cassi gets into next.
