Book Review: Life, Love and Death

Love hurts like a thorn when red lips give a last kiss on a rainy day on the island of bliss.

Life, Love and Death is a collection of short stories of Romance, Crime, Horror and Comedy.

My Review:

Cat Nicolaou’s “Life, Love and Death” is a collection of 18 short stories with several surprises and creepy twists and turns. The stories are all different, yet they all contain elements of romance, loss, death, and passion. Stories included are:

1) The Island of Bliss
2) On Fear and All!
3) On A Rainy Day
4) We Used to Talk
5) The Treehouse
6) She Only Thought I Was Dead
7) Clay Soldiers
8) High Heels, Stockings and Murder
9) The Last Kiss
10) The Nightcaller
11) A Midnight Date
12) Love Like Thorn
13) Hotel California, A Tribute
14) The Last Breath Of Winter
15) An Unexpected Meeting
16) Red Lips
17) Jack In The Box
18) Revolution Imminent

I won’t go into the basis of each story, especially since some are so short I can’t describe them without spoiling them for you, but I loved the names of the stories because sometimes they are very direct and straightforward, but other times you don’t understand the title until reading the entire story. There are men, women, young people and old having very different experiences and emotions. What was incredibly impressive to me as a reader was Cat Nicolaou’s ability to write as so many different characters from so many different perspectives. Although the writer’s style is evident in each story, it’s amazing how she is so many voices in this collection. My favorite of the collection is On a Rainy Day which is a mix of horror and sick humor, which admittedly made me chuckle a little!

Overall, “Life, Love and Death” is  a spectacular collection of writing, especially if you are a fan of short stories. The imagery in Nicolaou’s writing is some of the best I have come across, as well as, her writing as a whole. She perfectly captures emotions, experiences and images that leave a lasting impression in the reader’s mind. I highly recommend this book to any fan of short stories, romance, suspense and surprise endings. I look forward to reading more from Cat Nicolaou in the near future.
